Arts & Culture on Bowen Island
Bowen has a small but active arts community. There are galleries, local makers, exhibitions, theatre, film and live performances throughout the year.
You don't need to build a day around it.
Check what is on, stop somewhere that interests you, and keep going.
Start at The Hearth
The Hearth Gallery is near the ferry in Snug Cove and is probably the simplest place to start.
The gallery is run by Hearth Arts on Bowen, the island's non-profit arts organization. Exhibitions change throughout the year and include Bowen artists as well as artists from elsewhere in Canada. Admission is free.
Their 2026 program includes painting, photography, portraiture, student work and group exhibitions, so what you see depends on when you arrive.
Good for:
A gallery stop before or after the ferry, seeing current local work, or finding something you weren't planning to see.
Walk through Artisan Square
Artisan Square is a small cluster of independent businesses above Snug Cove.
Despite the name, it isn't one big arts centre. It is a mix of shops, studios, food, services and galleries.
The current directory includes Arts Pacific Gallery, which has shown work by Bowen Island artists for more than 20 years, along with other independent makers and creative businesses.
It's an easy place to wander rather than something you need an itinerary for.
Good for:
Local art, small shops, makers, and combining a few stops in one place.
See what is playing at Bowen Theatre
The newer Bowen Theatre is inside the Bowen Island Community Centre.
Hearth Arts on Bowen works with the municipality to program performances there, including theatre, films, music and other community events.
This is one of those things worth checking when you're already coming to the island, rather than planning months ahead around a fixed recommendation.
If something good happens to be on during your stay, go.
Local work doesn't only live in galleries
Bowen's creative community extends beyond formal exhibition spaces.
You will find painting, ceramics, photography, illustration, jewellery and other work around the island.
For example, Catching Stars Gallery in Snug Cove is an artist-run cooperative carrying work by Bowen and other Canadian artists, including paintings, prints, glass, jewellery and handmade objects.
At Artisan Square, the mix of small studios and independent businesses changes over time, which is another reason I wouldn't try to maintain a long directory here.
Find a few places. Have a look around.
